Review:

What a great mystery! This book drew me into the plot early and kept me engaged long after I should have gone to bed. I wasn’t sure I would like the story, at first, since I am not a big fan of Jane Austen style of books and know that Julie Klassen writes in this style, but the mystery aspect captured my attention, and I wanted to know what would happen next. I admit that I was not the greatest at predicting what would happen and definitely didn’t figure out who the villain was until it was revealed, but I tried! I loved the surprise ending – didn’t see that coming! I finished the book in less than a day all total, though I did sleep between starting it in the evening and finishing it the next day. I woke up eager to pick it right back up! As with other works, Klassen writes with a strong foundation in historical fact. She does her research to make sure that the characters behave as they should for people of that period. In addition, she also includes elements of faith throughout her stories. This one focused on forgiveness, with a message of hope woven throughout. Though Klassen usually writes romance and this book is categorized as romance, it wasn’t as strong of a theme as in her other books. The mysterious events and the murder overshadow the romantic aspects, in my opinion. But there was still a touch of romance within. I do love the fact that Klassen created a strong, independent heroine who was interested in medicine, not something common for women in those days. Overall, this turned out to be a great story, and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it.
