Worship in the Bible

By: Mandy Hughett

What do you think of when you hear the word “worship?” Many people think of singing first. Although, there are many ways to worship God. This month I am going to talk about worship in the Old Testament. Next month, you can read about worship in the New Testament.

In the Old Testament, there are a few different ways of worship. And when I say different, I am not meaning different as in choices, but as in what people do today. By no means, are these ways of worship wrong today, just not seen as often.

Singing
• Moses’ Song of Deliverance (Exodus 15:1-18)
• David’s Song (1 Chronicles 16:7-36, 2 Samuel 22:1-51)
• David’s Psalms (Psalms 96:8,9; 146:1,2; 147:1; 148:5; 149:1; 150:6)

Sacrifices and Offerings
• Dancing (Exodus 15:20, 2 Samuel 6:14)
• Shouting and blowing of trumpets (2 Samuel 6:15)
• Praise (1 Chronicles 29:10)

I would like to encourage you all to look at the scripture provided at the end of each example. I have heard people say that shouting and the blowing of trumpets is not Biblical. I have heard that dancing is out dated. But think about it. Is it really? Just because these were ways to worship in the Old Testament, doesn’t mean you can’t worship in that way today.

Although there are a variety of ways to worship, the main point is not the way you choose to worship, but the fact that you are worshipping. Worshipping God is very important and there are examples through out the entire Bible of worship. Next month you can read more examples from the New Testament. Until then, keep worshipping God, our Savior!
