Devotion: Psalm 37:30

September 24, 2024

Psalm 37:30 The mouths of the righteous utter wisdom, and their tongues speak what is just.

Oh how I long to be righteous and to live a life pleasing to my Lord and Savior. Seeing verses like this I have both hope and feel discouragement. I know that there is great power in the tongue, power for both good or evil. I pray that I would be able to do what Psalm 34:13 says and keep my tongue from evil and my lips from telling lies. James 3:5-6 describes this power all too well: So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire. And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell.

But while I worry about the negative possibilities of the tongue, I also find great comfort and hope in this verse because I see that it is possible for our mouths to speak wisdom instead of lies. And our tongues can speak what is just rather than speak slander or untruths.

My prayer for myself as well as for each of you is that we would know when to speak (Psalm 49:3) and when to hold back, biting our tongue in silence. I pray that we would seek the wisdom of others and heed their counsel, as well as counsel others to do right in the eyes of God.

What is the wisdom we should be sharing with others? James describes it in James 3:17: First pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.

Are you using your tongue to speak wisdom unto others? Or is your tongue that small spark that brings about great destruction?
