Proverbs 3:2 …for they will prolong your life many years and bring you peace and prosperity.
In today’s verse we have a parental promise from a father to son that lays out the plan for a life of peace and prosperity. It begins in Proverbs 3:1 where the father tells his child to faithfully embrace and guard Godly wisdom. He then follows that with today’s verse that says why. It is a cause-and-effect lesson about obedience and the blessing that obedience can bring to one’s life.
The father pleads with his son in the first verse to not forget his teaching and to keep the commandments. He emphasized a very heartfelt commitment be made instead of just outward compliance with his directives. He wanted his son to understand that this commitment was something that came from within, something that was serious and not to be taken lightly.
The reward for compliance and obedience was the prolonging of life as well as peace and prosperity. In Hebrew culture, the ultimate sign of blessing from God was a long life that was lived successfully. By keeping this commandment, they would be rewarded with God’s blessings of a long life of peace and success. Applying His wisdom would lead to a long, satisfying life filled with deep inner peace.
How do we take this directive from a father to a son and apply it to our life today?
To live a life that is wise we must avoid destructive habits and make healthy choices, as well as cultivate relationships that are calm and harmonious. That means we need to avoid reckless behaviors and use discernment in the way we live our lives, in our work and finances as well as relationally with others. Our lives should be focused and centered on the teachings of God which we can use to help maintain peace instead of harboring anxiety. We are able to rest in His stability and faithfulness instead of harboring worry and anxiety. And our focus should be long-term, not just momentary, day by day. We must build a life that is obedient and dependent upon Him to guide us in wisdom and action.
Today let’s choose to walk in obedience and ask for His guidance and wisdom in all we set out to. Thank Him for the blessings He has given you and live a life of peace and well-being.
Prayer: Lord, I choose obedience today. Fill me with wisdom for how I should live. Grant me discernment to live a life filled with long-lasting peace and prosperity. Amen
