Revelation 1:8 “I am the Alpha and Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.”
Today’s verse takes us to the end of the Bible. Written by the Apostle John, here we find the names Alpha and Omega, which are letters of the Greek alphabet. In fact, they are the first and the last letters of the Greek alphabet. This symbolizes the beginning and the end. Jesus is the beginning and the end. He existed in the beginning (Genesis 1:1; John 1:1) and exists in the end (the last days when He returns and establishes the new Kingdom on earth – Revelation 21:1).
He is referred to as our Lord God, which is translated from a single Greek word. This title serves as a reminder that He is our ruler and as such, we should be obedient to Him in all ways. He is also deserving of our worship.
John then goes on to further describe Jesus as who is, who was, and who is to come. He was our past, is our present, and is the future. He transcends all time. He always was and always will be. He is everlasting.
The verse ends with a final reminder that He is the Almighty. The Greek word for Almighty is only used in the New Testament, occurring ten times. What is interesting is that nine of these ten occurrences are found in the book of Revelation. It can also be translated as omnipotent, which is one of the translations used later ( Revelation 19:6).
There is nothing more that can be said about how great He is than what was contained in this short verse. Our human minds have a hard time understanding concepts like these, but it reminds us how fallible we are, as well as how insignificant when compared to God.
Today let’s focus on our once and future King and give Him the praise deserved.
