Devotion: Psalm 35:9-10a

April 20, 2025

Psalm 35:9-10a Then my soul will rejoice in the Lord and delight in his salvation. My whole being will exclaim, “Who is like you, Lord?”

These two verses come after David pleads with God to destroy his enemies. He had been facing persecution by King Saul and cried out to God for help. He demonstrated great faith in God to provide for his needs and to save him by rejoicing. We see his heart in the words he says.

What is your response to circumstances in your life? I know I do not always turn to praise when I face hardship. But verses like this remind me that I should. And then I feel conviction when I think of the lost opportunities to praise Him. I realize that I respond selfishly, wallowing in self pity and whining about the experience.

Then my soul will rejoice. Then. In the midst of the trials. In times that are less than ideal. Then my soul will rejoice. Not after everything concludes and God steps in. In the circumstances my soul will rejoice.

And my soul will delight in His salvation. It will delight in Him coming to my aid, in Him stepping in and carrying me through. It does not say my soul will rejoice after He has saved me. We should not be rejoicing after, but before and during because we have faith that He will do this for us.

No one is like our Lord. He loves us and wants what is best for us. He wants to see us happy and successful. He has plans for us and He will always be there to help us. But we need to cry out to him and then have complete faith that He will respond.

Are you rejoicing in what He will do or are you waiting to see what happens?
