Devotion: Isaiah 1:18

May 20, 2025

Isaiah 1:18 “Come now, let us settle the matter,” says the Lord . “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.”

I love that this verse opens with a conversation with God and He is inviting us to engage with Him. But even better, He is settling an issue once and for all to reassure us and give us hope and encouragement. It opens the door for reflection and understanding. And He does it is a non confrontational way that is not meant to be argumentative, but rather pleas with us to consider our lives and our behaviors.

This is then followed by a metaphor that shows us more about our sins and the effects they have in our lives. He says our sins are like scarlet, which is a deep, vibrant shade of red. Crimson is an even deeper shade and much more intense. Red dye is one of the most difficult colors to remove. That is why when we wash a red item of clothing with whites it bleeds into them and colors them pink. And once colored it is near impossible to restore to a pure color. Nearly impossible, but still possible to fix with some work. Our sins are the same. They are deep and dark. And they bleed into other areas of our life, coloring them and removing the purity of our actions and our heart.

But we have hope! Our sins will be white as snow, they will be like wool. Fresh snow is a beautiful, pure shade of white. It is clean and fresh, free of blemishes and impurities. And virgin wool is the same.

This is an encouraging message of inspiration given here. Though our sins are deep, dark stains in our lives, they can be washed away, made clean, removed entirely. No matter how bad you think you have been, there is hope. We have been washed by the blood of Christ and have emerged fresh, spotless, and pure.

Don’t believe the lies of the enemy. Don’t think you are beyond repair. Everyone can be restored. Turn to Him today and let Him wash you clean.
