Devotion: Colossians 2:13

May 25, 2025

Colossians 2:13 When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins.

Today we see a term that may make this verse confusing, especially if you are new to your faith or still learning. Hopefully by the end of today’s reading you will have a deeper understanding of what Paul is speaking of and what it means in your life.

What does it mean to be dead in your sins? This phrase refers to the state of spiritual separation from God we all inherit thanks to the fall of man in the garden of Eden. It is not speaking of physical death but spiritual. It is the lack of fellowship we have with God. We have said repeatedly this month that we are all sinners and nothing unholy can come before God. To be restored we must be made new and redeemed. Then we will experience eternal life in fellowship with our God.

The verse says we were dead in our sins AND in the uncircumcision of our hearts. It is also a confusing phrase. This means the state of being outside of God’s covenant. The Israelite men all went through a circumcision process to show they were under His covenant. But the Gentiles, everyone else, are not amongst His chosen people and distinguished by circumcision. Instead, we all, both Jew and Gentile, become spiritually circumcised upon faith. We become a part of God’s spiritual family when we become believers. Just like the Israelites had their flesh cut away, believers have their sins cut away from their hearts and minds  in a spiritual transformation.

Through this process we are forgiven of ALL sins, past, present, and future. We no longer have a future of death – eternal separation. Instead we are made alive with Christ and we receive the promise of eternal life. That means when we die or are absent from the earthly bodies we inhabit now, we will be alive in Christ forever.
