Devotion: Galatians 4:4-6

July 22 2025

Galatians 4:4-6 But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “ Abba, Father.”

This was the lesson we covered with our sixth grade girls in the youth group this last week, so it is funny that the verses are the focus today. God must have really wanted me to understand this passage for Him to put it before me twice in one week!

In God’s perfect timing, He sent His Son. He knew when the time was right. The Jewish people were waiting on the Savior to come and had been watching for Him for quite some time. But God sent His Son when He deemed it to be the right time. This serves as a reminder that God has a plan that is far better than any we could ever devise on our own. He works in His timing, not ours. It may be frustrating to us to have to wait, but it is always worth the wait because His blessings are beyond our comprehension.

Jesus came to earth as a helpless, little baby. He was born of a woman, under the Law and fully human while still fully God. His story is silent after His birth, with only a few short passages that highlighted events during His childhood (like going to Egypt, teaching in the Temple as a youth, etc.). And when the time was right, He entered His ministry and began serving.

But more importantly, He came to redeem us so that we could be part of the family of God. We received adoption through Him. We were welcomed into God’s family as His children. We weren’t just accepted and acknowledged as believers. We have been adopted. We have become a part of His family, His loved and cherished children.

And we can turn to Him with our needs. We cry Abba, Father and He hears us. He loves us and cares for us deeply, intimately. Abba is a very personal, intimate name. It is like calling Him daddy or papa. It shows us just how personal our relationship with God the Father is. We typically think of the Father as being supreme and unapproachable in His glory and power. But that is not true. We have a deep, personal relationship with Him, the relationship of a parent with a child.

Never forget that. You are His child, loved and cherished. You have a deep, intimate, very personal relationship with our Father. You can turn to Him and talk to Him about anything, at any time, and He is there and ready to help. How amazing is that?
