1 Corinthians 6:19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own…
We put our bodies through a lot. And some of us are worse than others with how we treat our bodies. That is why we need reminders like this one to tell us that our bodies are not our own. They were bought with a price and that price was the blood of Christ. Maybe this will be a wake up call for some people who didn’t realize that their body is a temple…
We don’t usually think of our body as a temple. We see it as just a body. A physical collection of cells and organs, blood and water, air and thoughts and our inner being. We see it from a biological view, forgetting that it is also the dwelling place of the Spirit of God. The Holy Spirt dwells within us and that makes our bodies a holy vessel.
Though our bodies are temporary and will break down and eventually die, for the time being they house the Holy Spirit. God is with us, within us, guiding us and providing comfort to us. We need to realize that our bodies are something we should treat with respect and kindness, something we should care for and keep up. We should understand that though it is temporary and will pass away, right now it is a temple to the Holy Spirit. We show honor to God by respecting our bodies and treating them right, by maintaining them and keeping them healthy. We need to pay attention to what we are putting IN our bodies, as well as what we do to the OUTER parts. In particular, we need to be respectful and not abuse our bodies sexually. Much of 1 Corinthians talked about sexual immorality and we need to be aware of this, abstaining from impure acts and honoring our bodies as the temples they are, the temple of the Holy Spirit.
How are you treating your body? Are you honoring God with it and showing respect for yourself and the temple of the Holy Spirit? Or are you indulging in things that abuse your body and succumbing to harmful behaviors and sinful temptation? Your body is not your own. It has been paid for by the blood of Christ and we are now stewards of the gift of life He has given us. He has redeemed us and we should be grateful and treat our bodies in a manner that is pleasing to Him.
