Psalm 9:1 I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.
Today we journey to the psalms to see what insights we can glean. We find ourselves at the beginning of Psalm 91 where we see where the psalmist, King David, begins with thanks to God. Before he even gets into things he is thanking God for His wonderful deeds. And he is doing it with everything he is, wholeheartedly.
It serves as a reminder to us how we should be grateful for everything. How often do you go to God simply to say thank You and give Him praise? I admit that I don’t do it as much as I should. Since beginning this month’s devotions I have realized just how ungrateful I have been and have been making more effort to give thanks at the beginning of all of my prayers. Conviction has been strong for me as I write each day. I pray you are also evaluating your life and if you find it lacking in the thanksgiving areas that you are making changes.
In this psalm we see that the focus is on gratitude as its theme and purpose. We must learn to be thankful in all circumstances. It is a choice we make deliberately. It is not an emotion we feel, but a discipline we develop as we go, especially when we face days where we do not feel grateful.
And we all experience those days. I’m feeling that way today as I try to write. I woke up sick today and am struggling to make it through my day since I still have a 9 year old to care for. Feeling as icky as I do, it is difficult for me to feel gratitude. But I am trying to make a conscious effort to say thank you for the simple things and blessings in my life. I am thanking God for waking me up, for giving me a family who is trying to be sensitive to my needs, for church online since it is Sunday and I can’t go, for the six book sales I had this morning. And so on and so forth.
There are always things we can thank God for. We simply need to look for them. It is all about choices. What choices are you making? Are you choosing to look for ways to thank Him wholeheartedly?
