Romans 12:21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
We wrap up the month with a simple command to overcome evil with the power of goodness. That goodness we use to overcome evil comes from Christ. We are not overcome by the negative, worldly stuff but are victorious conquerors in Christ.
What exactly are we talking about when we say “evil”? This means do not let the world bring you down. Do not feel overwhelmed by the things going on in our world and our communities – and we know the world is not a Godly place and bad stuff is happening daily, if not hourly and minute by minute. Watching the news on television for just a few minutes can bombard you with the evil in the world (which is why I no longer watch the news) and it is easy to be overcome by other’s actions.
But we don’t have to be overcome by it! Christ has conquered death and we have a future in heaven where there will be no evil, no bad things to drag us down, no negativity. We will be praising God every day and all the time while living eternally with Him and everyone else whose names are written in the Book of Life.
We respond to evil with love, kindness, forgiveness, and patience. We respond positively and let our light shine. The Spirit within us guides us in loving people who may be caught up in evil. We should respond to any hurt done to us, whether physically or emotionally. We respond with kindness and forgiveness, not revenge. Be sure you practice empathy and offer help to those in need, as we have talked about throughout the month. Lead by example, reflecting Christ’s love even to enemies. And try to always use positive communication. You want your words to be seasoned with Christ’s love.
What kind of evils are going on in your communities? How do you respond? I’ll be honest. I don’t usually respond physically. I avoid it entirely and then pray about it when I have the opportunity. But I don’t like getting involved unless it is vitally important that I intervene. I prefer to commit it all to God and trust Him to bring change.
With that, we conclude this month’s devotions on Kindness. I pray you all learned something new from at least one or two devotions and thank you for reading.
Prayer: Lord, Help me to be kind to everyone. Let me embrace those who are caught in evil practices with Your love. Let it flow through me. Amen
