Philippians 4:7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
We begin this month looking at peace with a famous Biblical promise you have probably heard before. In order to understand the context from which it is drawn, let’s first take a few minutes to read the chapter, from Philippians 4:1 to 4:7.
In this passage, we are able to see where Paul told believers to rejoice in the Lords always. Not only did he tell them what they needed to do, but he also told them how it was to be done (with prayer, petition, and thanksgiving).
The result? Today’s verse.
The term peace in the Greek language is eirene. It means a supernatural state of wholeness, tranquility, and harmony, all coming directly from God. Paul used it to describe a deep calm that isn’t dependent upon circumstances. It stems from Him.
But it is not just your normal peace. It is a peace that is beyond everything you might expect, beyond all you know. It transcends, or exceeds, our understanding. No matter how hard we try to find a comparison, there is none. It is that good. It wholly surpasses everything.
It is this indescribable, extraordinary supernatural peace that guards our hearts and minds in Christ. Again, looking at the Greek, hyperecho (guard) is directly translated as protection by a military sentinel. His peace, His amazing and beyond comprehension peace, shields both our emotions as well as our thinking and logic.
There is nowhere we can turn to find a peace like this, nothing we can do to make it happen. It is only through Jesus that we find it. And it will be beyond everything we ever thought we needed or might experience. We have a Guard standing watch over our hearts and minds, One who fills us with unimaginable peace – one so wonderful that we can never find a comparison.
Prayer: Lord, Prepare my heart to be filled with Your peace as we move through the month. Fill me with Your supernatural peace and joy. Amen
