John 16:33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
Today’s verse on peace comes from the final message Jesus shared with His disciples before His crucifixion. His words were disturbing to them, hearing Him speak of His death and the coming persecution, so He spoke words of comfort to bring some sense of peace to the bad news. This took place in the Upper Room at the Last Supper.
Just like yesterday, the form of peace, from the Greek eirēnē, signifies harmony, tranquility, and an inner calm. This is an internal, spiritual tranquility that exists in our relationship with Jesus.
He told them He had shared what was to come to bring them peace but it probably felt very bleak and hopeless. The nation of Israel was looking for a Savior, but they thought it would be a political one, not spiritual. They didn’t yet understand what He was giving them.
He informed His disciples that the world was not going to be pleasant for them. We were never promised an easy life once we became believers. The enemy wants to steal, kill, and destroy, and he will do anything and everything to steal our peace, including making the world we live in difficult. That is why we face opposition, persecution, attack, and hatred.
But Jesus said, “Take heart!” and reminded us that He has overcome the world. No matter how much the world tries to beat us down, He is still victorious and has already won the battle over death. He has the power to transform our world and our lives and when we become believers we become new creations.
True peace comes through Jesus and is found in Him only. When you feel overwhelmed, turn to prayer, community, and Scripture to focus on His nature rather than on your immediate problems. When the pressures of the world feel like they are going to crush you, seek His guidance and ask the Spirit to empower you to persevere and to fill you with His peace. And let His peace fill you. Let it wash over you, fill you entirely, and overflow into the lives of those others, blessing them the way He has blessed you.
Prayer: Lord, I refuse to allow the enemy to steal my peace or joy. You have overcome the world and are victorious. Fill me with Your peace and let it flow into the lives of others. Amen
