Devotion: Psalm 71:14

November 28, 2024

Psalm 71:14 As for me, I will always have hope; I will praise you more and more.

The author of Psalm 71 is not known, but it is believed to be David, in his later years, writing about the troubles he faced under the crisis of Absalom’s rebellion. Regardless of who wrote it, the psalm is a powerful reminder that though our life may be hard and we may face trouble, our hope should still remain in God and our praise should ever be on our lips.  The psalmist wrote that God had been his hope in his youth and God was still his hope as he aged (Psalm 71:5).

In the verses leading up to our focus verse, the psalmist demonstrates a strong commitment to trusting God for their protection and deliverance while remaining full of praise and thanksgiving. They acknowledge their dependence upon God throughout their life, and then give us today’s verse that declares ongoing continuous hope and increased praises.

This psalm is a powerful lesson for us as believers. It shows us where our own hope should lie, as well as reminds us to always thank God through our praise and worship. This means ALWAYS placing our hope in Him, trusting that He will always be there for us, and continually offering up praise and thanksgiving to Him.

Can you say YOUR hope is always in God? Even in tough times and hardship? I can honestly answer yes to these questions, but when it comes to praises being more and more, I do struggle. It is hard to praise God in the rough patches we go through. But today’s verse serves as a timely reminder to me (and hopefully to others) to ALWAYS be praising the God in whom we place our hope, even in trials and tribulations.
