Devotion: Galatians 3:13

July 17 2025

Galatians 3:13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a pole.”

Every person on earth is a sinner. We can’t escape that. We inherited our sinful nature from Adam and Eve. As a result, we are cursed. Sin separates us from God, holding us back, binding us in chains of addiction, deceit, and so much more. But God loves us despite that and He doesn’t want any to perish. So He gave us the Law to help people to live a righteous life. Unfortunately, because of our sinful nature we still mess up, and with the Law as our guide we saw exactly how bad we were. We still sin. And there are consequences for those sins.

Here’s the good news, though. He still loves us and still doesn’t want any to be lost so He made a way for us to be redeemed. His Son was sent to us, lived among us, experienced all the same things we experience. But Jesus lived a perfect life, unlike us. And because He is perfect He became the ultimate sacrifice – He became sin, the curse that separates us from God. And having done so, they nailed Him to the cross where He gave His life in our place. We deserved to be on that cross, not Him. Yet He took upon Himself the penalty for sin, ultimately fulfilling the Old Testament scripture that Paul quoted at the end of today’s verse. Deuteronomy 21:23 says, “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a pole.”

The word used in this verse for redeemed is exegorasen and means bought back or purchased out of slavery. Christ bought us out of the curse of the Law by shedding His blood. He became the final sacrifice mankind needed to atone for our sins. This one act, made by One who was and always will be perfect has allowed us to be free.

Are you still living like you are under a curse? You have been freed, redeemed, transformed. Today is the day to claim that freedom and live chain free, giving your all to God.
