Review:
This book was an interesting read for me. I wasn’t sure what to expect, not having any idea who Maakah even was, much less what her story was about. So it drove me into my Bible before I even started reading the book. And there’s really not a lot in there about this woman, so author Mesu Andrews had to take a lot of creative liberties with bringing her to life and weaving a story around David and his wives. At this point in the series, he had already married Ahinoam and Abigail (despite this only being book 2 in the series). I am not sure how I felt about the “sister-wives” style marriage they all had. I personally can’t imagine sharing my husband with other wives and dividing his attention fairly. It doesn’t feel right and it really isn’t, not being part of God’s design for marriage. But we know that they married multiple women in those Old Testament times, and David was no exception to the rule. Despite there not being much about Maakah in history, Mesu Andrews gave her a voice and a personality in this book and brought her to life. It was well researched for the times and helped me better understand just how things worked back in Biblical times. The romance that develops between David and Maakah is not forced or unbelievable and happens naturally over time. Being Biblical fiction, the elements of faith were obvious throughout the entire story. I feel that Andrews has written another great story for the second installment in the series and am looking forward to what the next wife will hold.
