Devotion: Psalm 116:16

July 29 2025

Psalm 116:16 Truly I am your servant, Lord; I serve you just as my mother did; you have freed me from my chains.

Truly I am Your servant. What an amazing statement. I am Your servant, God. We already declared we wanted to be slaves to God, and here we see the psalmist declaring pretty much the same thing – I want to be YOUR servant. I am dedicated to YOU, God. The psalmist declared his allegiance and commitment to God. It was not a forced obedience or a requirement. He CHOSE to be the Lord’s servant, just as we need to choose.

We see that not only was the psalmist devoted to the Lord and acknowledging His great authority, but he came from a family of individuals who were servants of the Lord. He had been raised in a family that was dedicated to God. He inherited a legacy of devotion, a life of service to the Lord. This serves as a great reminder to those who have children of their own (or youth who have younger siblings) – people are watching how you live your life, who you choose to serve, and it has an effect on their own behavior.

The psalmist continues with a declaration of deliverance. He recognized that God had liberated him from bondage. We don’t know what kind of bondage he was experiencing, whether spiritual or physical, but our Lord is faithful and cares and He delivered the psalmist from those bonds. And it is this freedom that led the psalmist to total dedication to God. Gratitude.

I want to be a servant dedicated to doing His will and giving Him all the glory He deserves. Do you? Join me in offering yourself to Him, humble and willing to do the service God places before you in your life. True freedom and a willingness to submit to God’s control and guidance will result in a life of fulfillment, peace, and joy. Is that what you want more of in your life? Talk to Him and offer yourself as a servant and He will direct your steps.
