Philippians 2:3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves…

As we near the end of the month we are once more reminded to do nothing out of selfishness. We are selfish individuals and need reminders to help us focus on the right things, not on ourselves. Today’s verse, written by Paul to the church in Philippi, tells us not to act out of selfish ambition or conceit but rather to value others above ourselves. Not only do we value them over ourselves, but we do so with humbleness.

What is selfish ambition exactly? In the Biblical sense it is destructive, worldly actions resulting from pride, envy, and self-interests. It can lead to disorder, strife, as well as evil practices. All of this is starkly contrasted with Christ’s humility and service.

We are told to do nothing out of selfish ambition or conceit because it is wrong. It is not Christ-like and leads to negativity in our lives. While we may think something we have done for ourselves is beneficial, in the long run it is just temporary and unfulfilling. If our focus is always on ourselves and what WE can get then we are not loving others and giving to them what the Lord is wanting us to give. He has a reason to put people in our lives and we need to be serving them in a Christ-like manner – meaning we are to love them and show kindness.

Biblical humility is a lowliness of mind. We recognize our dependence on God as we put others first (in the same way Christ did). Rather than selfish ambition, we have a modest view of ourselves rather than making our lives, our needs, and our wants first. We provide for the needs of others, both spiritually in sharing with them, praying with them, etc. as well as physically if the need arises.

Who can you show kindness to today? What can you do to walk alongside your fellow believers? Whatever you do, do it with humility and value their needs over your own. Sacrifice is not easy, but it is what we are called to do. And the reward is always satisfying and fulfilling when you recognize that you have acted Christ-like.
