Review:
All I can say is Wow. This book was amazing. I was super excited to read it, thinking I knew the story of the woman at the well. But the way Jill Eileen Smith brought her to life… Absolutely amazing and emotionally stirring. I found myself aching for this woman, for the pain and heartbreak, for the life she lived. And the encounter with Jesus truly was transformational in ways we can’t imagine. Smith gives her a name and a voice, bringing her story to life in a way that you can’t imagine. No matter how well you know the story, this retelling will resonate deep within you as you find ways that you can relate to this woman. Smith does a great job of researching the times and the people, being able to retell a story as if she were a witness at the scene and detailing it with customs, culture, and daily life that brings the ancient world to life before your eyes. This was deeply emotional and if you can make it through without crying you are an unfeeling brute. There is no way to not feel the emotions of this story, of this woman, and of the changes in her life when she met Jesus face to face. I have always been a fan of Smith’s writing, but this latest book has left an impression on me that cements her in my mind as a master storyteller. Great story, great flow and message, overall highly recommended historical fiction read. Don’t miss out on this treat!
