Hebrews 5:9 …and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him.
Today’s verse takes us into Hebrews where we have a summary of the Gospel in one sentence. In it we see that Jesus, once made perfect, has become eternal salvation for mankind. What is our response to this? How can we embrace this for ourselves? It is through obedience that we are saved by grace through faith.
What does the author of Hebrews mean when he says “once made perfect?” In Chapters 4-10 the author goes into detail about Who Jesus became for us and His role. He became fully equipped and qualified as High Priest through His obedient suffering. By doing this, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey Him.
Through our obedience to believing in Him, in what He did for us, and following Him we have salvation. It is through His great grace that we have been saved through faith, not through our own works (Ephesians 2:8-9). He came to earth as a perfect human, free from sin and blemish, and He gave Himself as the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world (John 1:29). God could have sent Him to earth as an adult, as Adam was created, but Jesus came as a baby, innocent and dependent upon His mother and earthly father to care for Him and raise Him. And He experienced life as we know it – all of the grief, suffering, joy and pain. He experienced it all and fully understands what we are going through as a result.
If you have never accepted Christ’s sacrifice for your sins, today is the day to repent (turn away) and ask for forgiveness. And if you have accepted His salvation, take a few moments today to thank Him for what He has done for you. Confess any lingering sins that may be marring your walk and recommit to living for Him once more. Turn to Him and be cleansed, washed by the blood, and created new.
Prayer: Lord, I confess my sins to you now. I ask for forgiveness for the wrongs I have done and ask You to cleanse me from all unrighteousness and make me new. Amen
