Psalm 71:20 Though you have made me see troubles, many and bitter, you will restore my life again; from the depths of the earth you will again bring me up.
Today we look at Psalm 71, which is technically written by an unknown author, though many Bible scholars attribute it to King David in his later years. They believe this because the psalm corresponds with David’s prayer for deliverance during his son Absalom’s rebellion (2 Samuel 15-18). It focuses heavily on facing enemies, aging, and redemption from distress. Regardless of who wrote it, we are focusing on verse 20 today.
Psalm 71:20 is a beautiful expression of unwavering trust in God’s power to bring restoration and revival. We see both suffering and redemption in this verse when it acknowledges that God permits many and bitter troubles, but trusting and finding hope in restoration from the depths of the earth.
The phrase “the depths of the earth” is not to be taken literally in this verse. It is symbolic of the lowest point of despair one might face. Think of hitting rock bottom and you are there in the depths of the earth. It is usually in these times that people feel the most hopeless and desperate for divine intervention – the only way one can truly escape the depths of the earth or rock bottom. There is only one way to look – up at Him.
It is also interesting to note that many commentaries view this verse as being a foreshadowing of the resurrection. Just as God brought the psalmist up from the deepest of despair and distress, this verse can also point to the ultimate victory over death and the grave which is only achieved through Christ.
No matter how hopeless things may seem, how many calamities we face, whatever challenges life throws our way, we have hope in Him to revive us and restore us – all the way from rock bottom, if need be. We not only see His power to restore life, joy, and purpose highlighted in this verse, but we can trust He will do it, that He loves us enough to lift us from despair and restore what feels impossible to experience again. The darkest circumstances are temporary and no matter how much they feel like they are permanent we can believe they are not.
The final note for today to give you hope and encouragement for the dark times… God does not abandon His people. He loves you and wants what is best for you. He has a plan and it will be the renewal and restoration you need. Never forget that He alone has the power to lift us from our darkest seasons.
Prayer: Lord, Some days life just feels overwhelming and full of despair. I long to feel renewal and restoration. Lift me from the low points in my life and let my testimony sing praise of Your faithfulness and mighty power. Amen
