2 Corinthians 4:16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.
Before we get started on today’s devotion, take a few minutes to read the verses leading up to it. We see that our verse begins with “therefore” and we need to know what came before it to better understand the context. Read from 2 Corinthians 4:1 to 16.
In 2 Corinthians 4:15, we see that the hardships and sacrifices endured by the apostles were for the benefit of believers. They faced many trials and suffered greatly in some cases. Paul spoke of his own experiences, from being persecuted, to being struck down, and so much more. But he was not complaining about the hardships he faced. Instead, he spoke positively of it.
And because of these hardships and trials Paul said they did not lose heart. They found spiritual strength and renewal through hope. It didn’t matter that their bodies were aging and wasting away, as Paul described it here. There was still hope and joy because there was daily renewal to sustain him through all experiences, good or bad.
Paul also spoke of the outward versus inward comparison. The focus on the outward person is a look at the physical bodies we have currently, temporary bodies that grow weary, decay, and eventually die. That was contrasted with the inward person, our spiritual self that is renewed or rejuvenated by the Holy Spirit.
Are you feeling worn out and weary? Are you wasting away and in need of renewal? Turn to God. Tell Him your woes, your worries, the problems you are facing that are dragging you down. He already knows but He is waiting for you to come to Him so that you can be renewed and refreshed. Find your renewal today. What are you waiting for?
Prayer: Lord, Though my body is wasting away and I feel the heaviness of life upon me, I give it all to You and ask that You renew me and give me rejuvenation today. Amen
