Luke 12:57 “Why don’t you judge for yourselves what is right?
Today we find ourselves in the book of Luke where we receive an urgent message from Christ regarding hypocrisy and discernment before facing the final day of judgement. In Luke 12:56 we see Him warning people to stop being hypocrites about what is to come in the final days. He then follows our verse with a parable about settling a legal dispute with an opponent on their way to court. Without settling, they will face judgement and be imprisoned for the unpaid debt (Luke 12:58-59). The interpretation of that parable is that those people who fail to have their sin debt paid by Jesus’s death on the cross will find themselves judged on Judgement Day and will be cast into hell.
Between the warning and the parable we have today’s verse. We are given the opportunity to take action ourselves, to discern what is right and to repent and turn to God now, before the final judgement. We must realize that we cannot be saved by our own merit and we need change in our lives. We must confess our sins, turn from them, and turn to Him instead. It is urgent that we judge for ourselves what is right – His way – and stop relying on others to assess our spiritual needs for us. Others can’t get us there. We must repent and change ourselves.
Tomorrow is not guaranteed. We don’t know how many days we have remaining until our death or His return, so we need to seriously consider the choices in our lives. We need spiritual discernment to avoid the consequences we hear preached about in church before it is too late.
As with previous days, we again see the root word krino used. It is written in the second person plural present active indicative form and when read in context it refers to making a mental determination to decide what is morally right. If we fail to evaluate ourselves, to discern or determine what is right, there may not be time to repent and turn to God.
Whether you have turned to Christ as the Savior of your soul and accepted His sacrifice in your place on the cross or whether you are already saved but living a life of sin, the truth of the matter remains the same. Change is needed now before it is too late.
What are you waiting for? Repent of those sins, accept Christ as your Lord, and live a life of righteousness and holiness. Act now before it is too late. He is waiting to forgive you and welcome you home with open arms.
Prayer: Lord, I come before You in humble submission and repent of my sins. Forgive me, wash me clean, restore me in Your sight. I want to be holy and righteous. Amen
