Romans 3:6 Certainly not! If that were so, how could God judge the world?
Today’s verse is the Apostle Paul’s response to an argument regarding God’s righteousness and how He is unjust for punishing sin. Take a few minutes to read the passage and get a feel for what was taking place and then come back to read today’s devotion.
In our first devotion this month, we talked about the fact that there is one Judge and Lawgiver, God, not us. He alone is sovereign. He alone is qualified. And He alone is righteous and holy. Today’s verse is a response to a claim that God is unjust in administering justice. Some argue that if we have such a loving God, why would He send people to hell? But it is not HIM sending them there. The consequence for sin is death. People choose to reject Him and therefore suffer the consequences. This does not mean God is not righteous.
We have to remember that God’s role as a Judge over all of mankind requires Him to have a position that is above judgment itself. And in that position, He is impartial and righteous, which qualifies Him as the only One Who is qualified to hold it.
We need to realize that God’s judgment is unavoidable and perfectly just. His perfect righteousness demonstrates to us that everyone, every single person (whether Jew or Gentile) is guilty and in need of salvation. One cannot argue that their sin actually glorifies God because it shows His grace and mercy when He forgives. That is just an attempt to justify sin and excuse it. And that is not how forgiveness works. Just because God is righteous and just, we recognize that His judgment on sinners is truly justified. Any human attempts to justify their sin by claiming it brings glory to God are wholly and absolutely wrong.
Let’s do what is right. Let us step out in faith, repent of our sins and strive to be holy, serve with a humble heart, and honor God with our actions. Enough of trying to justify sin and gain permission to do wrong. Live a life that is holy and righteous.
Prayer: Lord, I am sorry for making excuses about my sin. I repent of my sin and I turn to You asking for forgiveness. Guide me in a righteous path that I may serve You. Amen
