Galatians 5:13 You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.
Yesterday we discussed the freedom we have through our belief in Christ and how we choose to live as slaves to God. Today we see that each and every one of us has been called to a life of freedom. There is no reason any Christian should be living in the chains of bondage. Those chains have been removed. Cast them aside because you have been called to walk in freedom.
Paul reminds us that we are free in today’s verse. But he also issues a warning to us. We are free, but we need to remember not to misuse it. We still have a sinful nature. Our worldly, fleshly side still beckons to us to engage in behaviors that we should avoid. We have to exercise discernment in determining what steps we need to take, and we need to make the choice to say no to sin. We are called to freedom, but still struggle with our flesh. Our calling does not guarantee absolute freedom – we choose to answer the call to be free.
Instead of indulging in our flesh we are to serve one another humbly, letting love cover everything we do. Our freedom should not be used for selfish purposes. It should be used in service to others, reflecting His love and holiness. Our calling to freedom is a call to service. And that service is to be done with love.
Today let’s heed the call to freedom and service by looking for opportunities to love and serve someone else. Once you find someone, build them up, encourage them, and show them the love of Christ. Do not indulge in freedom in a way that only benefits you. Our eyes should be focused upward first and then outward toward others. Who needs your love today?
