This was another book that probably would not have topped my list of books I wanted to read, but having done so, I am glad I did! I wasn’t sure I’d like the storyline since World War I and II are not something I am overly familiar with nor find interesting. But this story does not necessarily focus on the events so much as it does on the characters. The events were simply a part of the setting, not the main focus. But that said, I still learned new things about the times and felt it was a nice balance between plot and character development. The espionage aspect fascinated me and I feel it was well written and believable. I was able to picture what was going on, despite my lack of knowledge of the times and events – a true testament to the talent of the author. It was a slow start for me, but once the story started picking up I found myself drawn in and wanted to know more. The mystery and intrigue scattered throughout kept me wanting more, leading me from page to page as I read far later into the night than I planned. Green did an excellent job of building a backstory to the mother, Lillian, and how it influenced the relationship between her and her daughter, Dinah.  The story had dual timelines that confused me at first, but I quickly figured out what was going on and was able to appreciate the author’s style of writing. The best part? The author’s notes at the end of the book! They show you the historical basis for the novel, with many of the scenes being based upon real events. It really opened my eyes to just how much goes into writing a historical novel and the research involved. I loved the history lesson and can’t begin to tell you what new insights I gained because there was so much. Though out of my norm for reading materials, this is a book that was thoroughly enjoyable and full of learning opportunity. A must read for any fan of World War I or II history!
