Luke 11:13 “If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
In Luke 11 we see Jesus teaching about prayer by using comparisons of how a father provides for his child. It is a comparison we can all relate to on one level or another, whether that be as a parent yourself or as a child who has had a parent or caregiver who cared for them. We all have experienced provision by someone who cared for us.
Jesus tells us that our flawed, imperfect parents provide for their kids because they love them and want them to have good things. When you love someone you want them to have the best there is and providing for them helps them to feel loved and cared for, while fulfilling something inside the giver, too.
If our earthly parents understand how to give good gifts, imagine how much more our Heavenly Father wants to bless us. He loves us so much more than our flawed parents do and through His mighty love He gives us the best gift of all – the Holy Spirit. There is nothing better that we could be given than Him. We receive the Spirit who dwells within us and guides us, helping us discern truth and transforming us day by day.
Jesus encourages us to ASK for the Spirit. God wants to give Him to us and is ready to bless us with His ultimate gift, but Jesus still tells us we should ask for it. God does not force us to take the Holy Spirit. He wants us to want it, to ask. And we can approach God with confidence and we can trust that He will respond to our request.
Have you ever asked Him for the Holy Spirit? If not then stop right now and turn to Him in prayer. If you have asked for the Spirit, trust that you have received Him and thank God for such a beautiful and generous gift. Every day let your gratitude be shown to the Father who loves you and wants you to experience His life changing gifts.
