Devotion: John 1:16

Oct. 13, 2025

John 1:16 Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given.

This verse gave me pause, this morning, as I sat down to write. Grace in place of grace already given? Or as the ESV puts it, grace upon grace.  What did THAT mean? I had to spend some time digging into it further to get a better idea of just what all of this grace meant!

The Amplified Bible translates John 1:16 as: “Out of His fullness [the superabundance of His grace and truth] we have all received grace upon grace [spiritual blessing upon spiritual blessing, favor upon favor, and gift heaped upon gift].” This version made the most sense to me than the other versions.

Grace is not just given to us once and that’s the end. The more we seek Him, the more we seek His will in our life, the more we receive His grace. We receive grace upon grace and then more grace. The grace is truly abundant and the blessings keep coming. When we are walking in His way, He blesses us. He showers us with grace.

Unlike the Law which brings punishment and highlights our need for atonement, grace brings blessing. And grace is free. It is given again and again and again, without reservation. Out of His abundant grace and His love, we receive. And then we receive again. And then again and again. It is inexhaustible, ever coming, always available. Out of His goodness comes grace and gifts.

How beautiful is our Lord, to give and give some more? We are wholly undeserving, yet He continues to rain those blessings down upon us when we are walking in His ways and seeking His face. And when we receive we can bless others because it is so abundant, so overwhelming that it naturally flows from us onto others.

Seek His face. Enjoy His grace. Bask in the blessings He has ready to rain down on you today and every day.
