Devotion: Psalm 103:5

June 10, 2026

Psalm 103:5 …who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

This psalm was written by David when he was a king and is a metaphor for spiritual rejuvenation. In it we see how God satisfies our soul, our desires, our needs, while also restoring our strength. It is interesting to see how David used an eagle and drew parallels between that and our spiritual needs and provision.

In the Hebrew community, eagles were seen as symbols of strength, speed, and vitality. We can understand the symbolism because we, too, see them as being majestic creatures full of power and strength. If you have ever seen an eagle in person, they are so much larger than you think and very impressive in their build. If you have seen them fly or pick things up while flying (catching prey or dealing with predators of their own), you know just how impressive they can be and how powerful. It is easy to understand why David would use something as majestic as an eagle to make his point.

When an eagle molts they shed their feathers and new ones come in. This allows them to fly swiftly, free from burdens or hindrances. They are able to soar on the air currents and updrafts, always flying higher and further than imaginable. David uses the eagle to help us to understand how we can cast off the heaviness of life to soar like the eagle. He points to the restoration of our spiritual wings and inward strength, much the same as Isaiah used in Isaiah 40:31 (which we covered not long ago).

It is God who satisfies our spiritual hunger and provides us with the strength, the rejuvenation, the renewal of our souls. He meets us where we are and satisfies the longings that are deep within us. And He does this in His goodness and with His presence.

I love how GotQuestions.org describes it: the eagle “is an appropriate metaphor  for the transformative power of God’s forgiveness, deliverance, and mercy. Just as the eagle can swiftly attack from above, swooping down and ascending again to the heights, God’s grace can quickly and decisively change our lives, lifting us from a pit of despair.”

Today let’s soar like the eagle, renewed and uplifted by His grace. Let His transformative power fill you and flow through you. Remember the eagle, the beauty and power it demonstrates as it soars through the air, and know that it is God who lifts you and lets you soar up from the pit of despair.

Prayer: Lord, Thank You for being my strength, for renewing me and lifting me high like the eagle. Let me soar confidently and securely with You being the wind that lifts me up. Amen
