Proverbs 27:2 Let someone else praise you, and not your own mouth; an outsider, and not your own lips.
We end our month of humility in the book of Proverbs where we get one final lesson in avoiding self-exaltation. One final reminder to be humble.
The proverb urges us to let others be the ones to speak words of praise and recognition rather than yourselves. We are not to boast about ourselves or engage in self-promotion. Instead, we are to remain humble and let our actions speak for us.
I don’t know about you, but I can’t stand it when someone brags about how well they’ve done or how good they are at doing something. It diminishes the achievement in my eyes when someone acts boastful. Even when their accomplishments are impressive, their attitude kills any praise that I would give.
But when you see someone who has accomplished something great and they are not bragging or pushing for others to give them praise, it makes me want to recognize them. And that is exact what the proverb reminds us to keep in mind.
Do not be boastful. Let others recognize your accomplishments and let those people do the praising. Remember that true honor, recognition, and praise comes from others – including strangers. Your character and reputation will be stronger if you remain humble. Let others sing your praises, from those you know to those who you might have never met, and let their words ring true.
Prayer: Lord, Help me to remain silent and humble when I accomplish something great. I don’t want to be boastful or full of pride. I want others to recognize me as a humble person. Amen
