Romans 12:16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.
As we near the end of the month, we are also nearing the end of our study of humility. It is my prayer that you have grown tremendously this month in this area of your life, since humility is not our default reaction to things. Today we return to the New Testament and what more the Apostle Paul had to say about humility.
We are reminded that we are to live in harmony with one another. This is being spoken to believers in Rome but the message was the same as it is to us today. We live in a world of different denominations, different belief systems, different religions. We live next door to people of different races, different roles, different lifestyles. Yet we are all to live in harmony with one another. It doesn’t say live in harmony only with the other brothers and sisters in Christ, but live in harmony with one another.
In addition to that, we are told to be willing to associate with people of low position. We are not to be proud but to be humble and accept people of lower positions in life than where we might find ourselves. For some people this is not difficult to do. But for some who have more influence or higher views of themselves it is something they have to think about and make the choice to do. It is sad that sometimes we need to be reminded to be humble and not to be conceited. But sometimes those reminders are very much needed, repeatedly.
Today look for someone you would normally pass by and not pay any mind to. How can you serve them? How can you help them? Perhaps you have some extra food you can share with the homeless people you see or maybe you can buy some small things they could use that they don’t have – sunscreen, toothpaste, socks, etc. We take these things for granted when we have them so look for opportunities to reach out and help people who are not as affluent as yourselves. Reach out and show God’s love to them.
Prayer: Lord, Help me to see those around me who are of a lower status than I am without making myself look conceited and self-righteous. I want to honestly offer help. Amen
