Singleness is a gift according to the Apostle Paul. (1 Corinthians 7:7) Does it ever feel more like a burden than a blessing? Does the single life feel like the lonely life at times?
I can think of two singles in Scripture. Adam was single. Adam looked around the Garden of Eden and realized he was all alone. Everything was in pairs while he was solo. No suitable helper could be found. God knew it was not good for Adam to be alone, before Adam even knew he was alone! He created someone just for him just like He has created someone just for you and me. Meanwhile, Adam had a work to do for God. He had to name the animals and tend the garden. He had to wait for God to provide his partner. (Genesis 2:15-22)
Jesus was single, too. He never married. He probably never even dated. I’m sure Jesus could’ve had the best girl in Nazareth. I’m sure several Jewish fathers tried to set an engagement between Jesus and their daughters. They said, “Jesus is a hard worker.” “He takes care of his family.” “He’s a good man for my girl.” No Galilean girl was good enough. No suitable helper was found for Jesus. And He never settled for less. God knew it was not good for Jesus to be alone. Meanwhile, Jesus had work to do at the cross. He is still waiting for His heavenly Father to provide His bride. Read Revelation. The church is the Bride of Christ. We are a part of the greatest love story ever told. A sacred romance. Jesus stayed single because He was waiting for you and for me. Now if Jesus was willing to wait for God’s best, don’t you think we should wait for God’s best, too?
God knows you are single. (Psalm 147:5) He knows it is not good for you to be alone. (Gen 2:18) Do not search for your spouse. (1 Cor 7:27) Your Father has already provided a perfect partner. (Matt 6:32) Meanwhile, you have work to do for God. (Titus 3:14) Single men and women care for the things of the Lord—how to be holy and please the Lord. (1 Cor 7:32-34) They can give themselves wholeheartedly to the Lord. Devotion without distraction. Commitment without compromise. Perhaps singleness is more about your gift to God than God’s gift to you. Give and it shall be given unto you.
