Hosea 2:16 “In that day,” declares the Lord , “you will call me ‘my husband’; you will no longer call me ‘my master.’
You may be wondering about today’s devotion, as well. Why do we continue looking at verses that appear to have nothing to do with transformation? But in my opinion today’s verse shows a huge shift in who we are and the relationship we have with the Lord – transforming us from a fearful follower to an intimate partner.
God speaks through the prophet Hosea of a future time in this verse. In it He tells us that His people would have a future restoration with Him. And in this restoration there would be a drastic change, what I argue is transformation. In this change we see His people going from calling Him “Baali” which is “my master” or “my Lord” to “Ishi” which is translated “my husband.”
What is so amazing about this shift is that His people are no longer fearful followers in a master and servant dynamic. There is no longer a relationship that has firm, unmovable boundaries that cannot be crossed. Instead, it is replaced by one that is intimate and personal. It is a relationship that is loving and close, one that no longer has expectations or requirements but is affectionate and warm, a relationship that is built on mutual devotion and dedication.
And even more impressive than that is the fact that this verse comes in a larger passage (Hosea 2:14-23) that shows just how much He loves us. In this passage we see He pursued His wayward people, following them into the wilderness to speak tenderly to them, not harshly or judgementally. They had been unfaithful, turning to idols and false gods. Yet He pursued them and spoke gently and affectionately to them, showing them His grace and mercy despite all they had done.
God does not want an obedient relationship with us that is based upon our fear or built by legalism or bondage. He wants a relationship that is heartfelt and true, a covenant marriage that is based upon genuine, true love and dedication. He desires a personal relationship with us that is intimate and personal, full of affection.
Is that the relationship you have with Him today?
If it is not, it can be. All it takes is turning to Him, turning away from the sin in your life. Confess your sins. Cease your disobedient ways and turn to Him as your Savior. Let His forgiveness wash over you, transform you, make you clean and pure in His sight. He wants that intimate relationship with you that is personal, like a husband and wife. Turn to Him today and let your life be changed forever, for all eternity.
Prayer: Lord, Thank You for pursuing me despite my unfaithful disobedience. Thank You for seeking me and desiring a personal, intimate relationship with me though I am undeserving. Thank You for changing me from a fearful, cowering servant to a beloved spouse. Amen
