Job 28:5 The earth, from which food comes, is transformed below as by fire…
Transformation happens not just in us, but also within the world we live in. We see in today’s verse how the earth is transformed below. But why was this verse selected to be included in this month’s devotions? Let’s see what we can glean from the words in it today.
This verse is taken from the book of Job which is one of the earliest books written and provides answers for such questions as suffering and why things happen. In the verses around today’s selection we see metaphors that explain things like mining and the provision of food. In these, we learn that man has many methods of technological advancement or ingenuity that allow him to extract things that can be used.
But none of this explains the mystery of HOW it all happens or why. The earth, which produces all of the wonderful and wondrous things we rely on, is being transformed. It is being changed, shaped, and remade by some mysterious force. Or rather, it is all done through the hand of God. He alone makes things happen, brings about the changes, remakes and builds things up that we see and use. It is not done through the efforts of mankind, no matter how advanced we become with our technology and know-how.
But what does this have to do with our daily walk?
We need to understand that what we have is not due to our own efforts, our own mining or farming efforts, our own ingenuity. It is ours because He has given it to us. He has blessed us. He has provided for us. He has done it all, not us.
What are you mining for or digging up? Are you seeking glory? Are you pushing for financial success or fame or notoriety? What are you sacrificing your praise and worship for in hopes of obtaining?
How much of the time that you spend digging for other things compared to how much time you spend digging through God’s Word? How much time do you give to Him thanking Him for the blessings He has poured out upon you?
Take a few moments today to stop and thank Him for providing everything you need and blessing you beyond those things with additional grace and blessings. Acknowledge His hand in your life and in all you have and thank Him. Then spend some time digging deep into His Word to learn something new. Not sure where to start? I always suggest the book of Romans to people wondering where to begin.
Prayer: Lord, Without You I would have nothing. I would be nothing. Everything I have, everything I am, is all due to You. Thank You for all You have done in my life and all You plan to do in the future. Amen
