Mark 1:8 “I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
Today’s verse can become a hot topic debate depending upon which denominational belief system you follow. But one thing is certain across each of the different denominations – we receive the Holy Spirit who resides within us once we become believers and followers of Christ.
In this verse, we are seeing John the Baptist prophesying over Jesus before he baptized Him. This all took place at the very beginning of His ministry, before He had even called disciples or began performing miracles. John’s baptism was with water only and was an outward, physical sign that the person had repented. It was a public confession in which they turned away from sin and toward God.
The baptism Jesus would bring was an internal one, an inward spiritual transformation where God Himself comes and dwells within the believer. While John’s baptism was important and held special meaning in the lives of the individuals he baptized, the baptism of Jesus was eternal and life-changing.
It is important that we recognize exactly what this means, regardless of beliefs about what it entails. This promise of the Holy Spirit marks the transition from the old covenant – that which was established by God with Israel – to the power of the New Covenant – that which allows us direct access to God, His presence and power being with us as believers.
Those who are baptized with the Holy Spirit are immersed in His goodness and power which produces a profound transformation in a believer’s life – both internal and external. At this point in our lives, we shift from relying on human strength to thriving in spiritual development and power (Acts 1:8).
We become equipped to share the Gospel and to serve the church. We find that internal qualities like love, joy, peace, and patience are deepened and we have a heightened capacity to better resist sin in our lives and walk away (though in the end it is still a choice we must make). As members of the Body of Christ, we connect and align with other believers in a unified spiritual community (1 Corinthians 12:13).
Whether you believe the gifts of the baptism of the Spirit have ceased or if they are still active and present in believers today, there is a transformation that takes place in each of us. Once the Holy Spirit is present in our lives, we begin to change. He is an intercessor for us, communicating directly with the Father when we don’t know how to pray, guiding us as we move through life’s ups and downs, hills and valleys. The more we seek God, the more profound the transformation is. Some experience a dramatic, immediate transformation while others undergo a steady behavioral shift that is quiet and muted but no less impressive.
If you are a believer, a follower of Christ, you have the Holy Spirit within you now. Pray and ask Him for guidance. Ask Him to empower you, to fill you with boldness to share the Gospel, and trust Him to walk with you through all of life’s challenges. There is no other religion or spiritual belief that compares to that which we experience with the Spirit within us.
Prayer: Lord, Thank You for giving me the Holy Spirit. I pray that He would fill me with peace, joy, patience, kindness, goodness, and more. Let me serve joyfully and willingly and give me boldness in sharing my faith. Amen
