Out with the Old; In with the New

by Amy Clarke

Read: Ephesians 4:22 – Eph 5:4
Key verse: Ephesians 5:8 “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of the light.”

What are your new year’s resolutions? Have you really thought about them? Are you going to make promises that you can’t keep? Have you made any resolutions when it comes to you and God? Maybe it’s time to gut out junk from year 2001 and make room for new and better things in the year 2002.

Technology certainly has come a long way the past few years. It’s started to replace old ways with faster and better ways of doing things. We can send email from a cell phone instead of by computer or post office. Instead of video cassettes, we can use dvds which give us a sharper, clearer sound and image better than videos. Things have gotten better.

When we become Christians we should be changed as well. It’s like replacing an old computer with a brand new one. It’s better and faster. When we become Christians, we should be a new person. If we aren’t changed, then there’s a problem.

If we aren’t changed after accepting Christ, we are still living in darkness. In our old ways, our old selves. Satan still has a hold on us. We are to be a new person, set apart, not living in sin like before. “For you were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by it’s deceitful desires.” Ephesians 4:22

Is there something in your life that’s preventing you from living in the light? Are you surrounded in darkness? Maybe you do have light, but not enough light. Are you still living in the ways that you used to? Maybe you used to live in the light, but slipped into darkness. You can get back into the light.

Let’s make the lyrics of this song by DC Talk our prayer:

I wanna be in the light
as You are in the light
I wanna shine like the stars in the heavens
Oh, Lord be my light and be my salvation
cause all I want is to be in the light
all I want is to be in the light

Let God be apart of your new year’s resolutions as we enter a new year and leave the old year behind us. Let’s search our hearts, and let’s let God search our hearts for what we need to get rid of in our lives, so we can be in the light. So we can BE a light in the darkness of this world.

Shun the darkness; love the light.
