Hebrews 13:6 So we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me.”
Confidence. Do you have it? Or are you floundering in fear, unsure of where to turn next?
The writer of Hebrews reminds us that God is there. This verse is actually quoting Psalm 118:6. But the author is saying we can claim that truth from the Old Testament for our lives and we can do so confidently. Man cannot harm us because He loves us and is there to help us. He who is in us is greater than the world (1 John 4:4).
The book of Hebrews was written to encourage God’s people. It serves as a reminder that we need to push through the trials we face with faith in Him to help us. He wants to be the strength we need to get through. He wants to guide us when we do not feel confident. He is our Helper, on Whom we should depend. He is the Source of our strength so we really should have no fear because mere man can do nothing against our God. Matthew 10:28 reminds us not to fear those who kill the body but cannot touch our soul.
The question the author asks is rhetorical. What can man, who is limited and unable to match the power that only God has, truly do to us? Nothing! Our souls are safe once we become Christians. Trials are not the end. Struggle is not the end. Death is not the end. Because we are His, bought by His blood, redeemed by His sacrifice in our place. We truly have nothing to fear knowing this.
Today let’s place our trust in Him. Let’s be confident in the knowledge that nothing is going to separate us from His love. And let us remember to trust Him and not depend upon our own understanding of things (Proverbs 3:5).
