Devotion: James 1:5

September 26, 2024

James 1:5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.

In today’s verse we see wisdom being requested for a specific moment in time, not in general for overall wisdom. James is teaching believers how to trust God deeper and more fully. Thus, this verse is a request for wisdom that covers that topic specifically – trusting God.

When we are unsure of how to proceed, which direction to go, which path to take, what to do in certain circumstances, we demonstrate our trust in God by turning to Him and asking for his guidance. When we ask God for guidance, we show we are placing our trust in Him for all of our needs.

And luckily for us, even when we mess up time and time again and fail to trust Him, He is still faithful to answer us and provide when we do seek Him once again. He doesn’t look at all of our stupid mistakes, our selfish behaviors, or our sinful flesh and say, “Nope, not worthy.” Instead He responds with a generous heart, freely giving and blessing us.

How do we determine what God’s gift of wisdom is and what it is saying to us? One way is the Bible. But this is not the only way. Scripture encourages us to seek wisdom in wise and godly counselors (Proverbs 11:14) as well as through the world around us (Psalms 19:1). And of course we should never forget that He Himself is the ultimate source of wisdom and understanding.

Today let’s turn to God and seek His wisdom for a specific circumstance in our lives. Pray about something that you may be struggling with or have a need for. Seek Him and His wisdom and let Him guide you towards resolution.
