Devotion: James 4:10

February 5, 2025

James 4:10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

Today’s verse is almost identical to what we studied on day 1 this month. The only difference between the two is that this verse does not include the word “daily” in it. Otherwise, the two verses are basically the same. We defined it previously, but today we are looking at how we can humble ourselves.

To review, in order for us to be humble we must show a modest or low estimate of our importance to Christ. We assume a heart attitude that is meek, obedient, and selfless (Colossians 3:12-13).

Here are a few verses that can help us to posture our hearts to do His will and remove self from the equation.

Seek the LORD, all you humble of the land, you who do what he commands. Seek righteousness, seek humility” (Zephaniah 2:3, ESV).

“Humility is the fear of the Lord; its wages are riches and honor and life. (Proverbs 22:4, NIV)

“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility, value others above yourself.” (Philippians 2:3)

“When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.’ (Proverbs 11:2)

“… These are the ones I look on with favor: those who are humble and contrite in spirit, and who tremble at my word.” (Isaiah 66:2)

There are plenty more, but you get the idea. We should be looking for ways we surrender to God in humble submission. Did any of them stand out as something you might do today?
