Review:

My daughter and I were both thrilled to find there was a new Carrick Hall novel available. We spent quite a number of nights taking turns reading Once a Queen aloud to one another and just as many nights reading this one together, too. It took us longer reading together than I probably would have done on my own since she reads slower than I do and we chatted about it as we read. But it was still a nice mother-daughter experience to read through together. This one is even better than the first book, in my opinion. We read about three chapters per night since they are fairly short and we had to discuss before going to sleep. We jumped back to the front of the book often, as well as looked back to the cast of characters numerous times. The writing style is easy to read and engaging, and the plot drew us into the story from the first chapter. I loved how the story lingered in my mind long after we stopped reading for the night – a true testament to the talent of author Sarah Arthur. Not only was it a thought provoking read, but it was also one with a solid message. Readers will find themselves inspired and growing spiritually, whether they realize it or not. I found that the message of repentance, paired with a strong message of courage, encouraged me in my own walk. Plus it made for great discussions with my daughter, allowing me to help her grow spiritually as well. The pace of the story is far faster than the first book which made it hard to put down each evening but also made us more eager to begin again the next night. Whether you are eight, like my daughter, or middle aged, like me, you will find this to be a delightful read.
