Devotion: Romans 8:1

May 10, 2025

Romans 8:1 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

This is such an amazing and comforting verse. It is a promise of God that every Christian should memorize and remember. Write it on your bathroom mirror. Put it on a post it note on your computer screen. Put it in front of you often because it is something we all should celebrate. There is no condemnation for those in Christ. None. Zero.

What is condemnation and how does it apply to us when used Biblically? We know that a building that has been condemned is labeled as unfit or unworthy. In the Biblical sense it means being judged as guilty or deserving of punishment. This makes sense if you look at them the same. A person who has been judged for punishment has been determined to be unworthy. Sin makes us unworthy. It separates us from God because nothing unholy can be in His Presence and have fellowship with Him. Sin leads to judgment and therefore leads to condemnation.

But God has given us a way to be restored and reconciled to Him. His Son died for our sins, for the eternal separation that we deserve and we are now made righteous. His death on the cross has made a path for us that draws us away from condemnation and instead restores us before the Father.

It is important to remember that those who are in Christ are not condemned. Those in Christ is a statement that means more than just those individuals who have been saved by faith. It means walking in the Spirit. We try to live a holy life, choosing to live according to His will and desires rather than by our sinful nature. We aren’t perfect and nothing says we have to be, but we do need to be seeking His ways every day. And then we know we no longer face condemnation.
