Psalm 86:5 You, Lord, are forgiving and good, abounding in love to all who call to you.
We start today’s verse with a reminder of how good our God is. It is not just saying He does good, which we know He does, but that it is His very nature. Not only does He perform good actions but He Himself is good, holy and set apart.
And we are reminded how forgiving He is. He wants good for us, success, joy, happiness. He doesn’t want us to be separated from Him so has provided a means of forgiveness. At the time this psalm was written forgiveness came through sacrifices at the Temple. But now we have forgiveness of our sins through the blood shed on the cross of Calvary.
Not only is He good and forgiving, but He is abounding in love. If He did not have immeasurable love for us He never would have provided the way to redemption through His Son. But His love is so abounding that He has guaranteed that we have a way to be redeemed. The key to that redemption is in those who have called on Him, cried out to Him, and asked for forgiveness. By grace we have been saved through faith and not through anything we have done on our own (Ephesians 2:8-9). It all comes through Him.
Today’s verse is taken directly from a psalm that offers us encouragement each day. We are assured that He is merciful and gracious, abounding in and overflowing with immeasurably beautiful love and grace. And because of this we can confidently come before Him and seek forgiveness knowing that He will cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Call to Him. Let Him know you are His, that you desire a relationship with Him. And then praise Him for the forgiveness you receive by His grace.
