Isaiah 44:22 I have swept away your offenses like a cloud, your sins like the morning mist. Return to me, for I have redeemed you.
The Bible is full of imagery and this verse is an example of that. Sometimes the imagery makes it difficult for us to understand the message, but have hope. It is not impossible to understand and once we do it brings about deeper understanding and appreciation.
In the first half of the verse we see our sins (called offenses in today’s passage) compared to clouds and mist. Both clouds and mist obscure our view and slow down progress moving forward. Our sins do the same thing. They prevent us from seeing the path and slow down our steps as we try to walk in His ways. They hold us back from doing and being what God wants for us.
But clouds and mist are also temporary. When the sun shines they dissipate. And our God, in His infinite power and strength dissolves the sins in our lives when we seek Him. He dissipates them, shining His grace upon our lives and restoring us.
The key to redemption is to return to Him. No matter how far we stray, how many sins we commit, He loves us and wants to redeem us. But we have to turn to Him and reach out. We have to take those first steps toward Him. When we return to Him, to His ways, He sweeps away our offenses and remembers them no more.
Look to Him. Return to His ways. Seek His face. And know that you will be redeemed when you do so.
