Luke 7:47 Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven – as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little.
The woman at the heart of today’s verse is sometimes attributed to Mary Magdalene and other times I have seen it said she was Mary of Bethany, the sister to Lazarus and Martha. Rather than focusing on WHO the verse is about, we are focusing on the event itself and forgiveness.
Prior to this verse we see that from the moment Jesus entered the house she kissed His feet. She washed them with her tears. She wiped them with the hair on her head. And she anointed them. She worshipped Him fully and completely without abandon. She did not worry what others would say or think. She served and honored Him regardless.
She was not a perfect person. Her sins were many, just as our sins are many. Yet He forgave them all without a second thought. She was cleansed from her unrighteousness.
She did all of this out of love for Him. Her actions were her way of expressing her heart for Christ. He says she loved with “great love.” He then said that those who have been forgiven little love little. This emphasizes just how great her many sins were. Her actions, done out of love, were her way of worshipping and honoring Him.
Your sins may be many. You may think they are holding you back. But He will forgive you. Seek Him today. Repent and give Him glory. Let this woman be the inspiration you need to live Him greatly and to be forgiven.
