Devotion: Proverbs 14:11

June 24, 2025

Proverbs 14:11 The house of the wicked will be destroyed, but the tent of the upright will flourish.

The wisdom of the Proverbs is unmatched by any other Scripture because where else can you find a complete sermon in one sentence? There is so much to learn from these short statements and each one could potentially be a life changing event for us. The themes often contrast the ways of the wicked with the ways of the righteous, which is what we see in today’s selection.

The house of the wicked is being compared to the tent of the upright. In general, this verse is comparing the life of a worldly, sin filled non-believer with that of a Christ-centered, life dependent and servant of God. The house of the wicked is the life made from sin, self-reliance, and lack of faith in God to provide. The tent of the upright is the life built on faith and dependance on God.

In addition, when we think of a house, we think permanent. Solid. Not moving. Something not easily destroyed. We do not view tents as being overly protective and supporting. Yet the houses will be destroyed and the tent will flourish.

Huh?

It is all in the attitude. The heart. The posture we take before the Lord. What we have on earth is temporary and our riches are stored up in heaven. We do not get to keep everything we “earn” when we die. Stuff is just temporary, fleeting. It will disappear and be no more. But eternity with the Lord our Provider…. Can anything be more glorious?

How are you living your life? Are you hunkered down in a mausoleum of your accomplishments or do you live the life of a humble servant? Our time here is limited, so make the most of every day and always be looking forward because our faith assures us that we have a future of splendor.
