Ephesians 2:5 …made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions – it is by grace you have been saved.
The past few days we have talked in depth about the transformation and freedom we have in Christ when we turn to Him as our Savior. Today we once again focus on that change in our lives and celebrate all He has gifted us with. We were spiritually dead due to sin, but we are made alive with Christ thanks to what He did on the cross.
Paul begins with a reminder that we were all dead in our transgressions. The definition of transgressions is an act that goes against a law, rule, or code of conduct. We were dead because we transgressed against the Law. The Law reveals to us God’s character while exposing our sinfulness and pointing us toward a need for a Savior. It is that Savior that makes us alive. Though we do not deserve it, He has forgiven us. He has taken our rightful place on the cross, sacrificing Himself when it should be us up there. It is by His blood that we are made clean, acceptable before God the Father.
Our salvation is a miraculous act of God that has brought us out of the darkness where we were dead in our sins and transgressions, where we violated God’s Laws and lived in separation, and He has given us life. We have been made alive, a new creation, adopted into the family of God. Nothing we do can repay Him for the price He paid for us. It is by grace alone that we are saved. It is by grace we are being sanctified each day.
I pray that today you reflect on the fact that we are made alive in Christ, brought from death to life through our faith in Him and His gift of grace. Don’t just live your life. Live it in gratitude and humility because we don’t deserve it. Be obedient to the call and walk in freedom today.
