Devotion: Ephesians 1:13-14

Aug 13, 2025

Ephesians 1:13-14 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.

Did you know that when you became a believer you received a seal that marked you as belonging to God? It is that seal that signifies ownership and guarantees your future inheritance. We don’t see it – it is invisible to the human eye. But we are sealed and guaranteed eternity upon becoming a believer.

What is a seal and what does it mean? The Greek word used means literally “to stamp with a private mark.” Seals were used anytime correspondence needed to be private. It was used for all official business. We see people throughout history using official seals that identified their documents as official.

What is this seal? Paul tells us that our seal is the receipt of the Holy Spirit. It is the Spirit that serves as a guarantee of our future inheritance. That inheritance is when we are taken home (go to heaven) and is something we should be proud to bear. Jesus was also sealed (John 6:27) so we are not alone in bearing His mark.

These two verses from Ephesians paint a full, official picture of what happens in our lives upon being saved. We hear the word, the gospel of Christ, and we believe. And when we believe we receive the Spirit which fills us. It is the Spirit that serves as the mark on us, the guarantee of our inheritance and the promise of future glory.

Today let’s thank Him for the Spirit that is within us, our guarantee of the inheritance awaiting us in heaven.
