Devotion: 2 Timothy 3:17

Aug 23, 2025

2 Timothy 3:17 …so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

You may be wondering why this verse was included in this month’s devotions and learning since nowhere in it does it mention the Spirit. But I felt it was important to include because it is through the Spirit that we become thoroughly equipped. It is not something accomplished on our own.

Paul uses this correspondence with Timothy as an opportunity to train him to be a servant of the Lord. Though he is teaching Timothy here, the lesson is relevant to us today. We should want to be thoroughly equipped to do His work and touch lives.

And it is through the Spirit that we are made complete, where the transformation begins and is carried out. It is through the Spirit that we learn Scripture and put our learning into action. Without the Spirit we would be ineffective, unsuccessful, and our work would be incomplete. But with the Spirit we are made whole, completely equipped to do His will.

The verse before today’s Scripture speaks of the Word being God-breathed and inspired by Him. This inspiration is from God. It is the Spirit that provides us with everything we need to be able to serve. The Spirit works within us to help us discern God’s will, to understand His Word, and guides our feet as we step out in faith to serve. Spiritual maturity comes from seeking the Spirit.

Each of us is called to be a witness, to share God’s message with those we meet. Let the Spirit thoroughly equip you to do His work. Seek God and trust Him to empower you with everything you need to be a servant of God.
