1 Timothy 4:4 For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving.
In the beginning, way back in Genesis, God created everything and He said it was good. He made it all, and He gave it to mankind to manage and to use. But over time, there was debate and discussion on what is good and what was not, leading to today’s verse. Timothy was facing opposition in the church he was serving in, and Paul sent him letters of encouragement and instruction to help correct the false teachings and to guide young Timothy in his leadership.
And among those teachings was this little nugget of truth – Everything God created is good and nothing is to be rejected if received with thanksgiving. A simple verse that is easily overlooked, but of immense benefit to read and understand. This refutes any of the false teaching that was going on regarding abstaining from marriage and rejecting certain foods. God created everything and with the right attitude, one of thanksgiving, nothing is to be rejected but all to be acceptable and good.
By emphasizing that everything is good, Paul directly challenged the false teachings by those in the area, those that Timothy was working with and needed guidance leading, who were dictating what people could or could not eat or participate in. Paul’s message was contrary to their own, being one of freedom and gratitude, recognizing God’s goodness in ALL aspects of life.
It is interesting how this was an issue so long ago since it is also a debate today. Depending upon which church you look at, some feel that they can dictate rules and requirements for marriage, while others argue that it should be anyone and everyone… There is debate over foods and drinks, what is allowed, what is acceptable, what is to be rejected…
No matter where you go, what time period you are looking at, there will always be people who disagree and who think their interpretation is the correct one. Seek God, trust Him to reveal the truth to you, and let the Spirit be your guide. And remember what Paul told Timothy – God created everything and He saw it is as good and acceptable. Nothing is to be rejected if received with thanksgiving. Always seek God and have an attitude of gratitude and He will show you the truth.
